The AV Receiver
The AV Receiver is a very important part of your HiFi equipment, and is often also referred to as the Surround Receiver. AV refers to Audio and Video.
The AV receiver is the â heartâ of your Home Theater System and provide all the inputs and outputs that you connect with your Home Theater System. In other words, the AV Receiver receives all this information and then plays traffic cop directing it where it should go.
Without the AV Receiver to operate in this capacity it would be impossible to have a Home Theater System, because the information couldn't be properly filtered and translated into the areas in which it needs to go.
Therefore as the heard of the Home Theater System the overall sound level of the AV receiver is critical to the quality of your Home Theater experience, and therefore it is important that you are aware of the AV Receivers function.
An AV Receiver combines basically the functions of three components:
1. A tuner for AM/FM; in some cases, HD (High Definition Radio), XM or Sirius Satellite Radio, and/or Internet Radio.
2. A Preamp that controls which audio/video source is selected (DVD player, VCR, CD player, iPod, etc...), processes the incoming stereo/surround sound signals, and distributes audio to the channels and subwoofer output. Video from components (such as a DVD player) are routed to a TV.
3. A built-in Multi-channel amplifier (5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 channels) that sends the surround sound signals and power to the speakers.
Once you are ready to make use of your A/V receiver, the setup is relatively easy. By using standard A/V cables, you can connect the outputs on your DVD player, stereo, satellite decoder, DVR, or similar components to the corresponding inputs on the back of your receiver.
From there you simply need to attach your TV and speakers to the receiver's outputs. Once everything has been properly plugged in and set up, you should be able to control many if not all of the functions of your Home Theater System directly from your A/V receiver.
Good luck with your AV Receiver.
